When is the best time to take maternity photos?

Ah pregnancy. All three glorious trimesters…well, maybe some are more favoured than others (hello, second tri, I’m looking at you!) I often get asked when is the best time to take maternity photos, and the answer is pretty simple: when your bump is big enough to be seen from sitting and laying down, but you are still comfortable enough to move around.  For most women, this is between weeks 28-34 of their pregnancy, or months 7 to 8.  In your last month or so of pregnancy, swelling and puffiness sets in, and moving around can be quite the chore.  Maternity photography involves multiple outfit changes, and posing, and these become an aerobic activity when you are carrying a little one inside, so it is best to do your session early, before practice contractions (Braxton Hicks) become a regular part of your day.

Expecting more than one baby?

Mamas of multiples often go on mandatory bed rest by 24 weeks, so it is best to do your maternity session before that time. From personal experience, my maternity portraits when I had my second set of twins were done when I was 23 weeks, and that was definitely pushing it as I was already on bedrest and could hardly stand. I would definitely advise earlier. By 17 weeks I was already measuring 27 weeks, so size isn’t the same concern when you are carrying more than one! 🙂

When is the best time to book my maternity session?

As soon as you reach 12 weeks you can book your maternity portraits! We advise mamas to book their packages as far in advance as possible, as our availability dwindles quickly with time and we are often booked full several months in advance. If you are hoping for a weekend date, this is especially true. We do offer weeknight evening spots as well, which are popular and convenient to those still working. 🙂  We provide an extensive collection of gowns and accessories, and will light, pose, and touch up your images for the most flattering results.
